A few years ago, a very good Porsche mate of mine put me on to an SC motor in unknown condition being sold for spares. We went down to see it and, though it was fairly neglected, it seemed worth a shot, so into the van it went. From there it went on the floor in my garage to be neglected some more.
I don’t remember how long ago that was (I suspect two years or so), but today was its reawakening. The motor for the 944 Turbo came off the stand and was delivered to Dom Delaney at Worcester Independent Porsche (07832 126 589) earlier this week and, after tea with the kids tonight, I got this SC motor out from behind the trolley jacks and under the boxes of 944 parts, and stuck it in the engine stand, ready for dismantling.
I know this has some head stud woes but it’ll be good to rip it to bits and see what else is kaput in there. I am collecting bits for the rebuild bit by bit: I got a set of new ARP rod bolts from Andy Perks, bought a set of Carrillo H-Beam rods and Supertec head studs and am now just keen to take the cylinders off to see what state they’re in. Pistons not really bothered about as am going with different ones anyway.
I also have a set of SSIs and an Autofarm two-in, three-out muffler to go on this when reinstalled, so looking forward to ending up with a really sweet 3 litre in due course. The motor will be balanced and blueprinted to the nth degree, matched and flowed everywhere too, so will run about as sweet as one of these can. I have a lot of expertise to call on, with much of it outside the Porsche ‘network’, so I’m looking forward to seeing what my buddies can come up with that is new and exciting.
Next question is what does it go in: longhood or shorthood?!
