Back to Life, Back to Reality…

Singing the praises of those who build their cars to be driven come rain, hail, or shine, convinced me I was a poor imitation of a 911 owner. Three 911s (4 Porsches in total) and not one of them ready to go to a staff presentation down south this week. That totally sucked.Orange Porsche 911 Carrera 3-0 4

I recently celebrated the 3rd anniversary of sending my deposit to George K for the orange Carrera 3.0. Three years have passed since those months of late nights, head drooping in front of the PC (was PC then), falling asleep while staring at pictures of a car I had yet to officially own. Much has changed in the interim, some of it as a result of owning that car.

While I have been busier than a newly-ordained parish priest for the last two years, my C3 has sat, and waited. Currently it sits and waits for simple stuff like a steering rack and an MOT. It could do with some new tyres as I have killed the existing Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. I have road 205/245 Kumhos to use, already mounted on my spare 8 and 9×16″ set, but I’d rather whack my 15s on and see what they look like. So I have bought a couple of sets of road legal track tyres in 15″ (MPSCs and Yokohama A008s) and will get them on the rims soon.

I also want to fit new window seals to the back of the orange car and then carpet the back. Driving the ex-Chris Harris ST today for the first time, the biggest surprise was just how quiet it was inside, despite being seriously light. I am going for that goal.

So, list of jobs looks like this:

Change the steering rack.
Collect these 15″ tyres and get a set on the 15″ Fuchs.
Get the car tracked and aligned at Tuthills.
Take it for a test.
Tax it.
Give it death.

Then do the seals and carpet. Think I’ll rent a huge heater for a weekend and do the job in a heated garage where things will be more pliable. Also on my list is getting my Porsche Motorsport steering wheel retrimmed in leather and possibly putting back seats in the orange car, which might involve taking out the cage and changing the front seats to match. And I have to wire in the heated windscreen I fitted, and change the front screen seal to the new one I bought. Yes, it’s all go here at the house where we have no spare time…

Sounds like you’re going soft! :-)

That’s a great car you have, it deserves to be blasting around those country lanes near you.

John, tell us more about the ex-Chris Harris ST. We saw the vids (parts 1-3), but then heard no more about it. Worth a story, rory.

We are planning our Fall Klassik, in north east CT and southern MA, for Nov 6+7. Last blast before winter and snow and dreaded salt. Rain or no rain.

Hi mate, pitched a piece on that car to Porsche World but they were not keen – shame as Chris H/GT PP/Autocar never properly rounded it off anywhere. Rest assured I have some feedback to share having enjoyed a drive. Will organise a piece on it soon ;)
