Blowing out the Cobwebs

by John on March 1, 2009

I parked my 911 up in July last year after Classic Le Mans and have not even washed it since. A few quick outings to keep stuff moving, and one spin on Christmas Day to wind it up a bit in holiday time, but apart from that: nothing. With all the doom and gloom around at the minute, it seems like a perfect time to bring it back to life.

I have some jobs to do, which I am quite looking forward to getting stuck in to. High on the list is taking the front windscreen out, and replacing it with a heated version that has been sitting in the little Landcruiser for far too long. While it’s out, I’ll be running some permanent power up behind the back of the dash for the new head-up speedo I have bought. Been testing it in the Prius and it is excellent – totally solves that ‘steering wheel obscures the speedo’ problem in old 911s.

Other jobs include a permanent bluetooth car kit tapped into my Autocom intercom system fitted last year – needs some figuring out but no doubt it can be done. I’m also running GPS on my much-loved Nokia N73 Black now (very cool), so I am throwing a Brodit mount into the car for that too.

My 15″ Fuchs from last year are almost done being refurbed, but that plan has kind of gone a bit sour now, so I may just sell them on once I have picked them up – we’ll have to see. Whether I stay 16″ or switch to 15s, I have to buy some tyres.

I am thinking about maybe trying Toyo 888s, or going to Bridgestone S02s to fully understand whether the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups I have been running for a while are worth that little bit of faster wear. They are worth buying for their outright grip and super sexy looks, no doubt about that, but I am researching deals on those mentioned and a few other trackday-tested ideas too, so we’ll see what happens.

Got to sort some road insurance on the 911 and it’ll be time to start taking it to work again – can’t wait!

John,

What make is the heads-up speedo display and is it easy to fit to a 911?
