I spent today dismantling my project 911SC engine. I had to use a few different tools to get things apart (didn’t have the 10mm allen socket or the flywheel bolt bit), but it all worked out OK in the end.
Taking the cam tower and heads off, there was obvious damage to the top of number 2 piston. Pulling the cylinders showed total destruction of ring landings and skirts. Getting further into it showed evidence that debris had travelled through the inter gear and maybe an oilway as there was one tiny scratch on a crank journal.
Other than that it looks great, most of it will go again I think. Maybe not in this motor, but certainly in something. Feels good to have it apart – got to split the heads and cam towers this week and have a look at the valve guides and cams. Then will have the case cleaned and send it off to get boattailed and maybe the oil channels polished. In the meantime, I’ll keep thinking about possible recipes for pistons and cams and whether to bother going twin plug.
I have a friend who loves doing this sort of stuff – helping me with this rebuild might be right up his street.
