Enter the Longhood

by John on August 21, 2009

When I was looking for my US car, I was fairly open about what it might be – longhood, shorthood, long as it was a rust-free 911 that was OK by me.

I had help in my search from a few fellow R Gruppers and, at the same time as I was buying the SC, a good buddy out in Amsterdam offered me something early and nice. I’ve never been great at saying no to a new car, so I recently agreed to buy it on very favourable terms!

1971 911 T Porsche restoration project

It’s a ’71 911T that’s been repainted in Gemini Blue. The paint is a bit quick ‘n’ dirty but it’s not bad. It has fibreglass bumpers front and rear, RS arches have gone on and it comes with a ducktail. I’ve no real idea what the plan is, but I figured it was time to own a longhood.

It comes as a complete car with a 2.2E motor and 915 gearbox, though it has been taken apart to fix a few bits of rust: in one rear seat well and by the fuel pump on the back. My buddy also changed the parcel shelf to sort some speaker holes. His plans changed soon after the work started though, so it is basically being reassembled to a transport-friendly standard for me to take on in the fullness of time.

Porsche 911T rally car build

I saw it out in the Netherlands recently and it is really tidy. It’ll eventually be 3 litres on 15s with proper brakes and suspension but not a money magnet – we want to drive this and have fun. I’l be calling on Richard Tuthill and the entire Tuthill rally car building team to help me with putting it together cost effectively, so will keep the site updated with reports and photographs. I am thinking of a look somewhere along these lines:

Quite excited about doing something with it sometime in the future, but for now it gets stored and I get on with making some money and pretend building. It arrives on Saturday September 19th. More pics then!
