Sitting here watching the Chinese GP red button coverage – absolutely top class effort by the Beeb in 2009. After the much missed F1TV from Bernie (superb multi-channel coverage of every yard covered by the cars on track) geekery is back in F1 coverage.
As any proper F1 fan will tell you, geekery is where it’s at. The sport is run by geeks for geeks, and the technology and attention to detail is on another planet. One geek who might have been out of the picture is still brodcasting, and doing a top job in keeping us all up to date.
I never bought into the Sniff Petrol anti-James Allen campaign. I have long enjoyed James’ commentary, perhaps ultimately not as much as the emotive Ben Edwards, who presses all my buttons in motorsport commentary, though is perhaps slightly weaker than someone like James in absolute analytical ability.
Anyway, James is still covering F1 via his blog and a Twitter feed during qualifying and the race. Even with all the coverage infrastructure the Beeb have available, James is still managing to pick up on stuff they are missing entirely. Great for geeks who can keep up with the feeds across many channels.

Thank you for the heads-up on James Allen's blog – it's well worth reading; obviously not as good as http://www.johndglynn.com
