Hero at Cadwell Park

by John on March 18, 2010

As previously mentioned, I was out shooting a Boxster feature for 911 & Porsche World magazine at Cadwell Park last Sunday. The photographer was all-round good guy, John Colley.

Being out all Saturday night and most of Sunday didn’t earn me that many Mothers’ Day brownie points, but it was time well spent: I learnt quite a bit from John over the course of the day. It’s always fun to talk to people who have been in the game a lot longer then you have, and get a little bit of amusing gossip on the guys at the top. It’s also fascinating watching professional photographers at work.

As well as our Boxsters, there was lots of other stuff on track, including a gaggle of E30 BMWs. Some proper sheds, but a few very nicely prepared M3s too. I’ve had a few E30s in my time and I never get tired of that simple, less-is-more styling.

One of the M3s was using a GoPro Hero video camera, which the marshalls banned from the interior (suction mount), so the owner cabled tied it to the kidney grille. I thought that was a sweet answer. It reminded me a bit of Philip Bloom’s Skywalker Ranch to SFO GoPro HD timelapse.

Anyway, I grabbed a quick shot of it with a Nikon 12-24mm on my D90: one of my first shots with this lens. Apart from one raindrop sneaking into the frame, I was pleased with the way it came out. I like the slightly twisted ‘muppet-eyebrowed’ look to the classic four-lamp front end.
