I couldn’t be without an early 911: older Porsche stuff is dripping in top drawer retro cool. You get the feeling that Ferry might have touched your car while he walked around the factory knowing the assembly line boys by name. You’ll never get that personal touch delusion from anything post 964.

I guess this is how Ferrari boys feel about the proper old Ferraris, and Bentley boys the same, though of course production numbers are miles apart. There’s just nothing else like an IB for me, can’t imagine life without those sticky-up headlights saying hello. I know that because I have been imagining life without it.
Not using something that is worth a few quid is a game for rich people – not guys like me. So I think about selling and imagine buying an early Targa for a Cab conversion. But then I do the time and sums involved in prepping a new project and think “why bother”. I go pick my car up from where it is currently stored, drive it and love it. End of conversation.
The only reason I haven’t been using it is time. Buckets of time spent developing new stuff for Glass is time not left for doing other stuff, like driving the car. The big work projects (podcast, new data, new consumer site content, new trade site blogs) are just about finished (one more in the works) so I am already feeling freer. Now time to make a list of stuff to do on my 911 and start doing it, as well as cleaning up my other projects. 24 hours in a day is simply not enough!
Bits to go on the Orange include drilled deck hinges, MSD ignition, refurbed injectors, central locking solenoids, heated front screen, new rear glass seals, Willans harnesses, clock vents, better installation of the intercom and so much more. When my new garage is eventually finished, I’ll have plenty to keep me busy.
