Porsche friends Steven Harris and Hayden Burvill are competing in the London to Casablanca rally in ‘Mexicar’: Steven’s superb yellow ’67 911S, which has been fully prepared for historic events by WEVO.
They have a hell of a trip ahead, mainly thanks to shipping delays which would have brought the car to London after the rally had finished! In order to make the second part of the rally, the car has been routed via The Netherlands, where customs are hopefully just about ready to clear it for collection.
So, our rallyists are currently headed towards Holland, where they will collect Mexi, before driving from Rotterdam to (get this) Algeciras in Southern Spain, to join the rally for the ferry to Tangiers that night; a 2400km drive in less than a day. Fingers crossed that their classic cannonball run goes like clockwork.
To track their progress, I have set up a post-by email address for Hayden to keep us all in the loop. Here follows Hayden’s first email, sent from rally start. I’m pretty excited to know what the rest of the week has in store!
Car one waved off at 7.30a, now on the ferry, on the way to Calais. Dinner with friends tonight, then hang on Sunday waiting for an early Monday dash south.
Fun so far, but a bit gut wrenching to see the cars come in from the first two stages, muddy and all smiles……. I would have set you a Porsche pic but this old Vauxhall is way cooler.
With no car yet, it has been a subdued day one morning watching the others, but we do have our maps and badges and making the best of the bad situation with late car delivery.
