This is a very special bit of footage. It comes from the 2009 Nurburgring Classic, and shows Porsche junkie and all-round hero Oliver Mathai firing the awesome 934/5 around the historic Nordschleife in 9 minutes 23 seconds.
Watch this video. Then get the headphones on and watch it again. The car is exceptionally fast by 2009 standards, but let’s not forget that it is now over 30 years old: older than many of you reading this. Those were the days!
Mathai’s pace here on lap 2 is mesmerising: it’s no surprise to learn that this was the fastest lap of the race. There are lots of things one could say about how the car rides, the noise, the brakes, the gears, the boost, lighting up the tyres in every gear, the commitment of the driver in manhandling this monster around such an exhausting, exhilarating circuit on those huge slicks with no power steering and, having piled in such a mega lap, he has to keep driving!
Yes, we could make a song and dance about all of this, but none of it could possibly make the video more impressive. So, let’s just watch and enjoy.
