Porsche 918 Spyder: Driving Video

by John on August 19, 2010

Back in the ’70s, Porsche promo was the number one. Think back to ad campaigns for the 911, and motorsport images of the 917, 935 and 962, and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

I hold the opinion that, somewhere in the early 1990s, Porsche marketing and publicity lost its edge. To some extent, I can explain that view to myself thanks to the lack of racing and a product line I wasn’t fully engaged with, but I have found the underlying message since to be bit wishy washy: ‘you can have a Porsche and they are all soft and fluffy‘. Maybe its just me, but I also felt that the material prepared for the Carrera GT failed to really cement the car in the hearts of hardcore enthusiasts.

The publicity we have seen for the 918 Spyder thus far is a sure sign that Porsche are getting back to their beautiful best. HD video was made for the new Porsche: sharp, focused and vibrant. Nothing is in doubt – the vision is clear and captivating. Watch this excellent video of the car on the move, shot at the recent press launch in the Carmel hills (be sure to view it in HD).

When I say ‘the new Porsche’, I mean Porsche the manufacturer, under its new owners, but those words also sum up my feelings for the 918 Spyder: a classic Porsche right from the start. Plus this video, with the wonderful Monterey light, reminds me of my second home. I love California!

Love the tech, but not the styling. I know Porsche doesn't really do 'beautiful' but Its too over-wrought and derivative. Think of an S2 Elise treated to a19 year old with a Photoshop package and you're about there.
