Porsche Design: Timeless?

by John on December 11, 2009

I dropped in to Tuthills today, to get some advice on a tiny knocking sound from the steering on my SC. There’s no play and it was not an MOT fail, but I thought a second opinion from number one mechanic Chris Dale would be good. While I was there, I noticed this very nice Boxster, in for a service and being worked on alongside the immaculate 356, which has just come back from the infamous London to Casablanca rally. I liked the look of old versus new, so I snapped a few pics.

The easy juxtaposition of old and new styles is one of the defining characteristics of Porsche cars, and proves the enduring quality of Porsche design. Put an older VW, Audi or Skoda next to a new one and you’ll see that run-of-the-mill cars are designed to go out of date. Not Porsche. Porsches are designed knowing that they will survive for a very long time. The new model is rarely radically different to the old one, as to do that would render past production disposable, and that is not the Porsche way.

Gotta love it!
