The oddball parts that go around inside the Porsche scene add another interesting angle to ownership. Finding difficult bits and making them work on your car, or keeping them safe until you have a worthy car or project, or just buying something you know is cheap and turning it ’round for a bit of pocket money: all of these things are good fun.
I went out on a parts collecting mission to Kent this weekend, where I’ve had some bits waiting to be collected for a few months. First stop was Gavin’s house, where I picked up a set of 15″ Yokohama A008s for the 944 (deal agreed back in October!). Nice sticky tyres that should suit the white car when it goes back on the road.
Next stop was Pete’s, where I had a tail waiting to come to its new home in Northants. The tail was something I bought from Pete’s Porsche parts auction site: Stuttgart Exchange. It was actually the site’s first sale! He’s a bit of a wiz, our Pete. Anyway, it’s a bit knocked about but I think worth saving. The early RHD rear wiper mech is probably salvageable, as is the metal grille.
I’d also arranged to meet a few 911 guys at Pete’s place: Jason, who had bought a pair of 7″ 944 Turbo Fuchs from me for his Carrera 3.0 Coupe, and Paul, from whom I’d bought a pair of RHD H4 lamps for a 3.2 Carrera (with vacuum height adjust) from a few months back. All nice guys and it was great to chat with the three of them: Porsche parts are ideal networking instruments! One of the H4 reflectors wants resilvering but I can live with that.
With my bits onboard, it was time to head to my final stop: Sean’s in Berkhamstead , to pick up a pair of H1s that I’d won on eBay a few weeks previously. Sadly no chat as Sean was out and about, but the lamps were good, despite the H4 lenses fitted. The H4s can go into stock & I have got some H1 lenses coming from the ‘States now.
Few bits came in the post today too, including a km/h speedo that I bought for the Varmint. I opened the box to find it’s mechanical drive, despite the seller telling me it was an SC/930 unit! I will use it in the T and get another for the SC. Either that or it can go on German eBay – I need to check what’s with the 911T at the mo, as MPH is no good for the target market!
I had a play with the lights yesterday afternoon and started taking the tail apart after walking the dog last night. The paint was falling off, so I decided to help it along a bit. Here’s some video:
