R Gruppe Bergmeister Tour: The Ultimate 911 Workout

by John on July 7, 2010

From Hollywood A-listers to Big Brother contestants: it seems everyone who is anyone has done a fitness video. Now it’s my turn. I call it: “How to keep your 911 in proper shape”.

Here’s five friends in Porsches – three drivers and two passengers – running their cars back to Monaco from the other side of Nice, after watching The Netherlands beat Uruguay to reach the World Cup Final.

The majority of my travelling companions are Dutch, and we were spending the evening with the Chaptermeister’s sister and her family, so you can imagine the atmosphere at the Holland Bar when the final whistle blew: electric!

Considering we had spent the early part of the day running over the Col De Turini and Sospel loop of former Monte Carlo rally stages, and the late afternoon sitting in a private club on the Med, hanging out and enjoying the weather and each others’ company, the Dutch win and the drive home were an amazing end to an amazing day.

The cars in this clip are Gerd Rijper’s original ’72 911 RSR, once the property of Porsche’s very own Dr Fuhrmann, Jan de Boer’s new 3.2-powered 911 ST-ish rally car and Hamish Franklin’s rally-winning 2.7 RS recreation. Great cars, great drives and great guys. What more can you ask from a road trip?

As a previous owner of Hamish Franklin's RS recreation, I have to say how great it is that the car is being so well 'used'. I should also point out that this car must have one of tehmost interesting careers of any of the RS recreations.

Delivered new in Hong Kong it ran in the Wellington Waterfront races as a 911E (as part of the Porsche Bridgestone series) prior to its conversion. After a few years of minor track work, I shipped it to Nevada where it ran the Silver State Classic Challenge; finishing 3rd in the 120mph class which was good enough to also win rookie of the year. It then toured the Southwest with visits to Laguna Seca, Las Vegas Motor Speedway (where it ran on track), James Deans' intersection, Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, Grand Canyon, Death Valley and any number of other motoring and road trip classic spots.

Hi Mark, thanks for your comment. It's a great car, on its way to Scotland next month for yet another driving adventure!

Best regards and well done on all those classic Porsche miles!
