Steve McQueen: Porsche Driver

by John on March 24, 2010

One of the great delights of running a classic 911 is being part of the fellowship of owners and drivers who have gone before. Perhaps the most revered is Steve McQueen.

I say ‘is’ as, though the man is no longer with us, his sun-bronzed spirit of cool lives on in every turn of a flat six starter. Every press of a Porsche throttle. Every nudge of a 911 gearlever.

Today would have been Steve’s 80th birthday. I’m raising a glass to the man as I type and looking forward to the centenary celebrations – I’ll most certainly be there.

Happy birthday Steve. As long as there are classic 911s on the roads, you’ll always be in our thoughts.

Here’s a terrific fan-made trailer for the movie Le Mans. It includes the famous quote that, like the man himself, will never go out of fashion.

“Racing is Life. Anything that happens before or after: it’s just waiting.”
