The Joy of Fuchs

by John on September 21, 2009

I had a good root through the boxes that came with the Gemini 911T today (got to think of a name for that car), just to see what we had in there. Some good stuff but also some junk, which I chucked out. I haven’t got the space or the inclination to store rubbish, so if it doesn’t fit into hot rod plan A, and it’s not in good enough nick to eBay, then it’s gotta go.

1971 Porsche 911 T parts

So far lost the old oil lines, bits of light lenses, old rubber boots, rusty straps, trim parts, rear seat squabs, old fuel filter and so on. Found a set of fully refurbed calipers and new genuine pads and flexis. Also found a supply of paint. Also found one intact red lens (going), sugar scoops (going going) and washer bottle & pump (going going gone). Gauges – inc MPH speedo – and Turbo tie rods with new boots all present and correct.

Porsche 911 Fuchs: 8 x 16 inch rims

Once I’d organised the bits for the T, I dug out some Fuchs. I’ve been promising to send some pics of a pair of 8s that I am thinking of selling to prospective buyers. They needed a wash, so I washed the pile they came out of, as I had the gear out anyway. Most came up great, though I do have a few sets in need of refurbing. Like this 944 Turbo/951 7 x 16 inch rim, one half of a pair that was repainted with what looks like chassis paint – awful stuff, whatever it is.

I am going to do some legwork this winter and sort out the right guys to do my own wheels. When you want the job done properly, you’re better off doing it yourself. I love all these wheels, but am going through a phase where I need to liberate some cash to throw at my building works – plus I have loads of other Fuchs, and am always buying more. It’s a real disease.

Fuchs wheels always look good on a Porsche. So much so, Porsche are even resurrecting them for the 997.
Great article John. Keep us up to date on the Fuchs refurb story. Its good to know that there are people out there that give them the attention they deserve.

I'll go along with that Max. Perhaps I'm going mad but I like the idea of using one as a base for a coffee table. Bit low so need to think how I can raise it a foot or two. it. Not a new idea but at least I can get some joy from looking at one rather than it being in the shed!

Have you decided to sell the set of Fuchs? If so, I am definitely interested. Please email me with the details.

Hi Mike, I am letting some friends see the pair of 8 x 16 Fuchs and the set of 7 and 8 x 15" refurbed Fuchs next week, so they may or may not sell. Thanks, John
