Under the Sea to Germany

by John on April 9, 2010

I’m currently in Germany, enjoying my annual visit to the Essen Techno Classica show.

The show is huge – the biggest classic car show in the world – and for a freelance Porsche writer is unmissable. Nowhere will you find a bigger selection of dealers and parts suppliers, all in one place.

Though I’ve been in the country since Wednesday, I haven’t had a huge amount of show-chat time as yet. I arrived in need of sleep and with a Total 911 feature to finish, so only caught half an hour of the show preview night. Yesterday morning was spent on the laptop in the press centre, but I did manage to get out after lunch.

I spent a couple of enjoyable hours in the company of the owner of the yellow ST – my most recent feature car. Engrossed in Porsche chat, we didn’t see much, but it was great to hook up.

After that, I journeyed to the TwinSpark stand, where I got the chance to say hello to Gijs van Lennep, and chat about what he’s been up to and some plans for 2011.

TheTwinSpark and Zuffenhaus boys have brought some great products to the show: their RSR brakes are ready to go and the recently-announced WEVO distributorship is already bearing fruit.

Elsewhere, I chatted with Michael Roock about the excellent selection of cars he has brought along, including the immaculate 2.4S seen above. Michael built the red lightweight SC we featured in Total 911 a few years ago and the quality was excellent. His latest creations are at the same high level.

Today is Friday and is my final full day here. With no outstanding work to do, I’m off to spend it walking around and taking pictures. Just like my first visit, all those years ago.

More news later!
